NICK

My stomach clenched with hunger, knocking me out of dreamless sleep. I opened my eyes and let out a sigh; my face was against the pillow. Dahlia’s eyes were closed, her hand wrapped around my left arm that rested across her chest, right atop her heart. She was pale, her brow furrowed, plump lips slightly open. Slowly, I untangled my arm and turned face up, hoping I could go hunt and return before she woke up. She moaned and turned on her side to hug my arm, her head against my shoulder; I smiled, there was no going away for the moment.

“I miss my teddy bear,” Dahlia mumbled.

“What?” I asked, turning to look at her.

“I used to sleep with a teddy bear until before mom died,” she replied, her eyes opening.

I placed a lock of golden hair behind her ear, then kissed her forehead. “I’ll get you one.”

She smiled faintly, kissing my shoulder. “You are better than a teddy bear.”

My stomach roared, the hunger spreading to my whole body, muscles tensing.

“Go,” she said, sitting and pushing me off the bed. “I’ll go visit Carmen and make sure she’s okay.”

I stood looking for some clean clothes.

“Are you sure you’re ready to get out? How are you feeling?” I asked while I put on my jeans. Dahlia sighed, wrapping her arms around her knees. She was wearing one of my T-shirts, the milky skin of her legs exposed. No purple marks marred any part of her body, I knew that, but couldn’t help to worry.

“I won’t lie, it was horrible,” she whispered, then cleared her throat. “Not just because of what he did but because now I know that I’m putting you in even more danger than before.”

I arched a brow. “I could say the same, human hunters, some vampires, and those of my kind who consider me a traitor would gladly kill you to get to me. It’s just a part of being what we are.”

That was a bit of an exaggeration, I knew she was a much more appealing prey to those who pursued us.

She pursed her lips and sighed. “I wish we could move to another planet, one where being as we are is less weird.”

I had to agree to that.

“All we need is a Stargate or a spaceship that can enter hyperspace,” I teased.

She lifted her eyes, a small smile on her lips. “You are such a nerd.”

I chuckled. “You make it sound like you’re not one, too.”

She smiled, then shrugged. “Definitely not as bad as you. Now quit stalling, go hunt, you are making me even hungrier.”

I leaned, and pulled her in for a quick kiss.

“Take care,” I said.

She sighed. “I will.”

I picked up the dirty clothes and cleaned up the trail of mud before leaving the basement.
